The 8 Best Moments from the Oscars

The best Oscars ever? It certainly was full of memorable moments that transcended the red carpet. I’ve picked what I think were the best moments from the night.

No, I haven’t included John Travolta’s strange introduction slip up, Kelly Osbourne’s bizarre red carpet coverage or Leo’s reaction to losing out on an Oscar for the umpteenth time or Pharrell choosing to wear shorts because that was, frankly, not acceptable. But there’s still eight little gems…

1. Lupita Nyong’o’s supporting actress Oscar win, headband and speech

It’s pretty much a universal truth that Lupita Nyong’o is all kinds of fabulous. Her incredible performance in 12 Years a Slave has been getting recognition all award’s season, and she topped it off by winning big on Sunday. She stunned in a beautiful blue Prada princess gown, which was accessorised with a gorgeous gold Fred Leighton headband and some pretty fabulous satin platform heels (also Prada). She thanked her family and the 12 Years a Slave cast and crew, but the standout part of her speech: “No matter where you’re from, your dreams are valid.”

2. 12 Years a Slave’s Best Picture Win

The star studded film, by a British director, based upon the historic account of Solomon Northup’s life won the best picture award. The film’s career defining performances were recognised by the Academy, in nominations as well as with this win . Chiwetel may have lost out in the Best Actor category, but he had plenty to celebrate.

3. Jared Leto’s Speech

His performance in Dallas Buyer’s Club bagged him an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor and his speech was pretty perfect too. A grounded family man, Jared thanked his mum, who he’s been seen with throughout the awards season, his older brother and bandmate, Shannon and shouted out the people of Ukraine and Venuzuela.

4. The Pizza Delivery

Ellen’s impromptu pizza order was definitely one of the greatest moments of the night. After weeks of dieting to fit into that dress, hours of pampering pre Oscars and interviews all the stars are pretty hungry. Meryl Streep and JLaw tucking into pizza slices while Brad handed put plates and napkins is something that this year’s Oscars will be remembered for. (That and the tough competition in almost every category and recognition of remarkable performances and films, of course.)

5. Cate Blanchett’s Women in Film Message

Winner of the Oscar for Best Actress, Cate took a moment to speak on perceptions of women in the film industry. “And thank you to those of us in the industry who are still foolishly clinging to the idea that female films, with women at the centre, are niche experiences. They are not. Audiences want to see them and in fact they earn money.”

6. Michael B Jordan in Givenchy

We focus a lot on what women wear throughout the awards season, but the men really stepped it up this season. Colour was a trend that the brave opted for, Jared Leto and Matthew McConauaghey both chose white tuxes for the occasion. McConaughey paired his Dolce and Gabbana tux with a black waistcoat, while Jared, in Saint Laurent added extra colour with a red bow tie. But keeping it classic in black Givenchy, with a little twist (check out the collar detail), Michael B Jordan looked super stylish.

7. Jennifer Lawrence’s Annual Oscar trip + JLaw in Dior, because let’s face it, she looked fabulous.

So, JLaw falling at the Oscars is becoming somewhat of an annual thing. And it seems everyone loves her even more for it. She laughed it off and left us all wondering why we don’t look that good when we fall down (maybe, because we’re not wearing red hot Dior).

8. The record breaking Oscar selfie

Ellen’s selfie is the most retweeted, ever. And it’s no surprise with all the glamorous stars Bradley Cooper’s long arm managed to cram in. Lupita’s brother made sure that he was part of the action squeezing in behind Bradley in the picture (I’m sure we’d all do the same given the chance).
