Lorde’s hit single “Royals” catapulted her into the charts at the end of last year. And, as is usually the case with songs which are such big hits, there have been a few covers.
Today covers can become little gems, think Bastille’s indie version of Miley’s “We Can’t Stop”. (I for one don’t care if it makes me immature that I laugh every time Dan sings, “To all my homegirls with the big butts”.) A common genre, reggae, ties these three covers of Lorde’s breakout hit together.
Here are three covers of “Royals” reggae style:
1. Busy Signal’s “Well Prepared” – Busy switches up the lyrics and gives “Royals” a Jamaican makeover with this autotune-heavy offering.
2. Terri “Royals” – Total Jamaican vibes with this cover. I can’t find an audio of this, but there’s a clip of it here and 6 days left to listen to it in full on David Rodigan’s latest BBC 1Xtra show.
3. Jamie Lou Stenzel “Royals” – Complete with a video shot in the Caribbean, this 11 year old may just follow in the footsteps of other young YouTube stars with her covers.
What’s your favourite cover? Which songs would you love to hear in a reggae style?
